Don't want to quote but just saw a thread on here which eventually claimed that combat mechanics in games limit how a game can comment on violence when like....... Play NieR please 💀💀💀💀

huh, i havent seen it but do you mean like. they are saying if a game has you fighting an enemy or doing combat/killing that it can no longer critique violence or explore it
I already blocked so I can't find the original but their wording iirc was it "severely limits" how much games can explore violence. One example they ended up using claimed that a game that has themes of violence being bad whilst having violent combat is contradictory
ah ok. i still do not get what theyre trying to say when hearing it 2nd hand but i should probably do something better with my day lol. i feel like having a player character enact violence is one of the best methods to explore it actually and is somewhat unique to the video game medium too?
theres novels where you can pick your path but. games are one of the few times where you can be in first person controlling your actions and having the work interact back to you. so it has a unique opportunity to make you reflect on your own feelings irt violence in a very personal way ??
This was my opinion as well lmao. Their main point was on the general idea that combat is necessary in games rather than critiquing individual games with combat so I can see _some_ merit in their point, but the medium has already taken advantage of combat in very interesting ways
yeah i think i can kinda get what they mean. i think many writers and game devs have also already explored the question of "why must we explore conflict through violence alone?" like im vaguely gesturing to undertale but its not the first, only, or last to ask that question.
I love NieR so much because 99% of commentary on the limitations of video games as an artistic medium can be immediately disproved by counterexample thanks to a NieR game ❤️ BLOCKEDT!
