To sum something up. While I know a lot of people, most social stuff that happens for me is incidental. I happen to be around, or we bump into each other and chat a little - nice, but that was never the intent. Look at this a bit differently for a moment: It might be "a few close friends" but that right there is a huge thing to have. Close friends. Don't take that for granted. Rather have interactions with a few true friends than a crowd.

And, if you do crave the attention of more people, then there really is no other way than "diving in" and being (pro)active. If you go through life without making connections, yes, very few will know if you disappear.

I do base this on my own experience, the burden is not on others, it's on us (you) to reach out, we can't wait for others to assume you want them to spend time with you.

If we would all wait for others to come to us, everybody would be waiting around all alone! :D And you know in the grand scheme of things does it matter how many know if you even exist? Not really. Those who are important to you know. That's my 2cents anyway ;)

So generally, it feels like an existence of tolerated politeness. Not belonging, not feeling welcome, and generally just knowing you could disappear and nobody would even notice.

Absolutely have had this feeling before lol. It's also exhausting having to be the person to initiate every time, and it really adds to that feeling of like "What if I just don't? Would anyone notice?". Sucks lol.

I can sympathize. For example, the number of people that know me but don’t even realize I do -anything- with Furthemore or within the furry fandom is depressing. I’ve had friends ask if I’m going to Furthemore.

I’m a vice chair, and have been in leadership since the beginning, so yes?
