It makes logical sense. START and SELECT were literally used for those functions. You pressed START to start your game and SELECT to change modes. No game UI does that anymore. Now pressing START brings up an options menu.

I have to look at my controller every time it asks me to press the three line button. I’ve been using the series X since lunch and I still can’t memorize which button is which. It’s even worse when I’m playing in a dark room.

I still say start & select, but the other day I told my gen alpha family member (lifelong gamer) to press select and he had no idea what I was saying. Then I said the "cheese slice button" and he was like "ooooOoh"
