I'm hesitant about the term 'cult' as a scholarly category (just like 'religion', I think it's tied to discourses of power), but I'm very aware that scholars' attempts to police the term has often resulted in the dismissal of survivor narratives. In our new research project ex-members...

Yes I have just immersed in “cult wars” narratives (Barker et al) and they raise a lot of epistemological questions. Mostly I am like, “Really? My experience is so easily dismissed?” Reading Zablocki helped me a lot. I will try to get your book stateside. Thanks for connecting.

I find the dismissal of ex-members on the grounds of bias bizarre - everyone is biased! I think NRM studies is making positive strides towards a more engaged study with ex-members, especially recent projects on spiritual abuse etc. Hoping our work is one small step in that direction :)
