My wife and I are former K-12 teachers. From my experience, there’s so little support, infrastructure or guidance for teachers in the US. We’ve accepted that people will just burn out of the profession.

Zero ability to teach the parents. The parents don't know how to do it. Many don't have time to learn it to teach the kids. Many working multiple jobs. Many can't afford tutors.
So the kid just flunks out
If they’re don’t, they’re probably not teaching phonics at all. They’re teaching them “sight words” and “context clues” but never teaching them to actually sound out words.
