There’s no reason for ANYONE to still call African American cuisine “slave food.” Leave that ignorant rhetoric on the bird app. It’s 2024—be serious. #BLACKSKY

35. I currently live in Maine, but my dad was a Marine so I lived all over as a kid.
I have personally made at least 20 of these and a lot more that aren't on the list. A bunch are common anywhere folks are poor or came from being poor. At least that was my way in.
22 as well. I was raised in CT but my family is from NC and GA.
I'm back in GA but I don't eat most of this stuff anymore. My friend teased me cuz I make kale instead of collards these days.😂🤣
27. Lived in NC for 19 years, after moving down from CT. But half this stuff I had had long before I moved south.
Fun story about "chess pie" from a coworker who made really good ones for our office parties. He was pretty sure it comes from "just pie," in response to "what kind of pie is this?"
My coworker used to bring in chocolate chess pie. It was almost like a brownie. But your description makes sense together with his explanation - without the pecans, it's not pecan pie. It's just...pie.
2. A tomato sandwich and a rabbit stew
I'm British / Australian
I'm sure some of these have different names in the UK
The only Southern I can claim is South of Watford Gap (not near Watford)
29, from from North East/mid-Atlantic. But I love sampling food cultures from all over so I am a bit of an outlier probably. Like I had frog legs with French cuisine not southern cuisine. But a lot is sampling of, and loving, of various food cultures rooted in the south as well.
Considering that a lot of slang used to refer to sex sounds like carpentry and/or violence, you can go ahead and believe ’em. I assure you they’re real.

Both grandmas grew up in the south though
