Europe can provide a lot of SATCOMs, but I'm more concerned about non-US-reliant space-based ISR targeting capabilities for European precision-guided munitions that are supplied to Ukraine. FR, DE, ITA, FN have ISR assets but not a tightly integrated mass C4ISR PGM system that NATO uses.

Then there's PNT. Galileo is there and very useful, but I'm not sure how far deployed/adopted PRS equipment is in EU forces (note UK and Norway aren't licenced users of PRS yet). So for PNT NATO and Ukraine highly reliant on GPS. But...

I don't know how easy it is for US to pull the plug on NATO members' uses of P/Y code GPS (the military service) without harming US users. The terminals and systems are so widely distributed and used with allies. I'm not aware of a P/Y selective kill switch, unlike the civilian C/A GPS signal.

Either way, if "Europe" is to do more for strategic autonomy, it really needs to go hell for leather on space-based C4ISR because we really rely on the US for that which makes our fancy equipment and professional forces so deadly. UK needs to decide what part of ISTARI it will do a big rollout of.

And if Europe is going to be hurling a bunch more satellites into orbit for its own needs, Ariane 6 is insufficient for the quantity of launches needed. Good stimulus for other possible launch providers for smaller satellites, but Ariane 6 will be the only heavy lifter in the game for Europe.

For less sensitive satellites India could be contracted for reliable and competitively priced launch services until European providers meet demand. European space sector has long languished compared to US due to anaemic institutional demand, global competition. Those two big factors are changing.
