Paperwork processing is notoriously slow leading to a lag in services for veterans. I’m pretty sure no job was inessential at the VA.

Randomly firing a swath of people doesn’t fix a paperwork flow issue. Analyzing the issue and correcting the process (and then MAYBE laying off some people) would be appropriate.
