Out today! This report from @htheaker.bsky.social and me has been a long time in production. We hope that this can be a resource through which we can discuss the program of #Sinicization in #Hui communities comprehensively and develop a clearer picture of what its implementation has produced.

1) Sincization is an iterative process that builds in stages. This is why it unfolds irregularly across the country.
2) Sincization encompasses a wide range of policies and is not just about mosque architecture.
3) Sincization relies on BOTH human and digital surveillance
4) Sincization is intrinsically linked to programs of economic development and security.
5) Sincization reflects the party-state’s prioritization of Chinese as the language of religious practice and interpretation in Islamic communities and emphasizes the primacy of state-approved texts
6) Sincization facilitates the further integration of the party-state into the daily governance and operations of religious communities. Effectively it is seeks to consolidate control over religious life and practice at a granular, community based level.
7) Sinicization requires key coordination between local party-state organs and Islamic Associations. These localized efforts take direction from broader national imperatives and effectively put clergy in a frontline position of implementing and enforcing the campaign’s dictates.
