I genuinely believe these people have convinced themselves they're immune to whatever diseases show up, and only those who really deserve it will get sick and die.

Yeah, it's similar (imo) to the prosperity gospel Christianity stuff - if bad things happened you deserved if, if you're rich and successful obvs you're a great person
That's a feature Quiverfull life (fundamentalists who have huge families). The group of kids become a conglomerate instead of individualized people. Many Qf parents frame death as "It's better to be dead than to sin."

Their castle walls will keep out the sickened common folk. We live in squalor and therefore are petri dishes of disease, unlike those that sit on gold plated toilets that turn their ass green.
Higher infection rates require mothers, typically, who no longer are allowed to vote & were forced to have all these children, to stay at home with all of those sick kids, effectively making it so they cannot work, either.
It's ALL linked to control of people they believe they're better than ....
On this as with climate change and every other real or potential threat, I believe the wealthy think their money will always keep them safe. And to hell, of course, with the poors who don’t have money to protect them.
