Hate is all he has to offer. He isn't working on gasoline, energy costs, grocery prices, tax breaks for the lower and middle income for whom tarrifs are going to hurt, the only campaign promise he still has is hating the trans.

It should also come as no surprise that he's completely wrong on the history. There was no "Tariff Commission of 1887." There was one created by Congress in 1877, but it was most certainly *not* what Trump says. It was essentially a statistics and data service (and by most accounts, not great at it)

Ironically, the commission (as well as the treasury department 's bureau of statistics, upon which it depended) had gotten much better by the mid-1880s due primarily to the 1883 Pendleton Act's civil service reform, making most positions non-political appointments and emphasizing actual expertise

Ironically, it was president Chester A. Arthur that surprised everyone by acting independently and championing reforms of the patronage system. He signed the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act in 1883, which made merit, and not patronage, the basis for promotion and pay within the federal government
