Lettering is the art of text design in comics, basically. I'm in charge of making sure all readable text looks good! That means picking fonts for dialogue and sound effects. The style for most Viz manga is to completely replace the Japanese SFX with matched English ones.

Most modern manga come with the Japanese SFX and non-dialogue elements baked into the art, so they need to be erased by hand, and the gaps redrawn so the new English elements appear seamless. What we call retouch or touch-ups, basically.

In cases where the original SFX has an effect applied to it, it's up to the letterer to match it as closely as possible. We're pretty much left to our own devices for this, so there's a lot of room for creative approaches.

Beyblade X is of course a really special project to me, so I wanted to give it my all and make it stand out compared to my previous work. So I bought about $200 in new fonts (all Hanoded fonts) to make my English SFX with.

Fonts are the most common approach for SFX in western comics, but generally are drawn by hand by the manga artist; giving them a more lively feel. Fonts in localized manga can lose this vibe if used poorly so I tend to modify them with hand drawn flourishes when possible.

A fun thing most folks don't know is Beyblade's famous "Let it Rip!" catchphrase is "Go Shoot!" in Japanese. These all have unique flourishes in the original, so I paid special attention to make unique ones, myself.
