I deeply appreciate the nuance woven throughout this entire article. I don't think I'm alone in having a family divided in its political colors - some of my diasporic cousins, aunts, and uncles are hardcore Trump. One family, notably, is rich and benefits from pulling the ladder up. 🧵

A year or so ago, I was asked to expand this 2020 article into a full-on chapter, for a book about right-wing people of color. I revised it assuming that *he* would be out of the picture by 2024. Having to revise it in the aftermath of Nov 6 has been hard as hell. colorlines.com/article/i-we...

My own family, as the article says, is not partisan but ideological.
Among their peers, however, they are exceptions to the rule.
My folks are senior citizens now, so they avoid relatives whom they don't politically agree with as much as possible. But when they do interact there's just no effort at having a discussion. They would rather "focus on what matters".
I've been shat on multiple times for being "too liberal".
And then you have to deal with that tension of your beloved family saying the most pants-on-head moronic things… but like. Where do you begin. Woof
"Just ignore your brother. If you talk to him, he'll continue." said to me, after the bereft-of-political-literacy brother went off on something completely unhinged and outright insulting to women
Fucking wild. Absolutely great time. 🙃
You know where I land. My younger brother lands the same way.
Sure, there are some folks you absolutely should block/ignore/condemn. But we should be more precise in our standards here.
