Every time I say this, some people get mad. A lot of people want to be lied to. Once you really understand this, a lot of human behavior starts to make more sense.

It cracks their Identity. Even if it can save them, they'd lose their life over the foundation of their thoughts.
The "Santa Claus" effect? The strong desire instilled in childhood to believe in something that does not exist because it comforts and shields people from reality? The strong desire to believe Someone is keeping score and will reward you for believing in them? 🤔 Hmmm
You are 100% correct. Combine that with people's inability agree unwillingness to accept there's even a remote possibility that they're wrong about something—here we are.
It's why it's so important to protect the meritocracy fantasy that white men have built for themselves. As long as they can continue to believe that they deserve what they have, they don't feel an obligation to make things better for everyone else.
People LOVE being manipulated. They will go way way out of their way to offset the weight of a decision. And they get so mad when you point that out. Lol
It's true: just accepting what you're told is a great deal less effort than thinking things through. Especially if what you're told makes you feel like you're special or valued or safe, or alternatively, like problems you're having aren't your fault.
I have a friend who said this to me a few years ago. "Some people greatly desire to be misinformed." I told her we should make T-shirts, and now I wish we had.
the truth imposes limits. The truth says things like, "they will never love you back." "You can't afford that" "time's up." In lies, all things are possible.
It's why fact checking is among the least convincing ways to change someone's mind. Even if you debunk that single claim, you still haven't adjusted the belief system. We need to tell a better story. We need to recognize when we are trying to convince the audience, not the rube, that we're right.
