As a long time public defender/criminal defense attorney, I can think of only two clients ever who talked to the cops & walked out of trial not guilty.

My talk, in addition to “Am I being detained?” & “I want a lawyer.” Being the only things you say to a cop. As white/model minority presenting people that if they’re with someone who’s black or brown, behavior they’d otherwise get away with may cause their friends to get in trouble.

I was so relieved when my kids were small that parents were no longer supposed to teach kids to look for a person in uniform if they got lost or needed help. The better advice was to teach to look for a mom w kids to ask for help bec uniform=/=safety. Need to start learning to avoid cops as toddlers

I stress the lawyer above the parents. Having parents at the station has turned out badly in so many instances. "TELL THE POLICE OFFICER ALL YOU KNOW!!!" or YELLING at the child while at the station. Just terrible stuff.

Oh agreed. Some states offer additional Miranda protections to requests for parents so from my lawyer-brained perspective the request itself can be useful, even if the parents actual presences does not.

Absolutely critical!!!! I don't always love my curriculum, but my district added a research paper about the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments this year and we really dug into it. Our young people need to KNOW THEIR RIGHTS!!!

I can't speak to how specifically to interact with the police as a PoC but it seems likely that there is no set of intersectional states that changes every day from Shut the Fuck Up Friday. It is, in fact, always Shut the Fuck Up Friday, and your specific silence may vary while keeping the core.

(I know it is not the same thing and I understand your perspective is going to come from a place that I will never be part of.) I 100% agree and have done this with my very pasty kids. We had a talk about what to do if the protests get dangerous and what to do if they've been arrested - Stay silent.
