So The Sims 1 and most of the music in its expansions were primarily composed by Jerry Martin (with some additional help from Marc Russo, Kirk Casey, and a few others on some tracks), with the primary exception being the Makin’ Magic expansion, which used a variety of licensed tracks.

Like you said, there are definitely some bossa nova and anti-consumerism inspiration (and I think some of that may have come from when Jerry was working on SimCity), but there is also some jazz influence as well.

I think what stands out to me about the soundtrack is that it never feels like it outstays its welcome. A lot of the music is a bit on the simplistic side, but I think that helps keep the soundtrack from getting boring on repeated listening.

I personally love the build mode music the most, which are a collection of piano pieces in varying styles. With the exception of build music 4, which was by Marc Russo, the rest of the build music were originally basic compositions by Jerry, who then gave the pieces to John R Burr to improvise.

The music across the game represents a variety of genres, but it all comes together so well to give The Sims 1 a very concrete identity.

Fantastic! From the perspective of a musician, are these songs difficult to play? Were they written for freestyle or is there arduous craftsmanship behind them?

If you’re playing them the way they’re recorded, I’d definitely think they’re difficult! But they do generally follow set chord progressions throughout the songs, so you could easily do some freestyling once you got them down.
