That may be the case but IF we can without too much compromise we need to keep American relations ticking over for any number of reasons, and given the pressure the new administration will put on that it requires a lot of attention. Europe, on the other hand, is a good-faith partner with whom...

... we can continue to build good relations with no more impediment than Starmer's ineptitude. As for free movement and the single market, that's a helluva leap. EFTA? Switzerland? A bespoke deal for the single market? None of those would seem to be on the cards for us and that's our fault.

It's just wrong to pose the two options as if they're a choice, have one and don't have the other... or focus on one and neglect the other. They're both necessary, and one is considerably more urgent while the other requires patience.
