I've also noticed that you show up in searches if you use a word in your submission. So if you draw an image of a slugcat or something, might be worth mentioning it!
People searching "rainworld" or whatever they are looking for, without the hashtag, will see it then too!

I can't believe people are out here rediscovering SEO and hashtags, because we've gone so long with an algorithm dictating searchability that people have forgotten how things used to be only 10 years ago.

Use searchable hashtags and terms! Use descriptions and titles! Archive your stuff with tags!

I've been in my own little bubble, acting no different on Twitter than I did on Tumblr all this time, so I'm actually genuinely shocked to learn people don't remember.

But I'm glad the pendulum might swing the other way, if only until Bluesky eventually goes corpo, too. Algorithms ruin communities.

Twitter trained me to use as little hashtags as possible (because the less hashtags that were in a post, generally, meant the algorithm liked it more)

Alt text is not for that. Alt text is for screen readers and vision impaired ppl. You can set up a prompt to use it in settings. Many ppl won't share your posts if you don't include it. It's about accessibility.

For a lot of topic-based feeds I use/make, key words in alt text work too!

Just be mindful not to put hashtags in alt text (unless they're displayed on the image itself) so blind folk don't have to listen to a robot say all the hashtags 🫡

That said, after you, or your audience, have followed enough people and engaged with enough posts, the Discover Feed gets good. Y'know, for people that prefer the low-effort browsing experience. You just gotta follow and engage with stuff you LIKE so it knows what that is.
