People who don’t live here or have never been to our Mardi Gras have trouble grasping the scale of it. We don’t just have a parade on one big day, we have almost 100 parades over three weeks all over the city, the suburbs, and surrounding towns. You can’t possibly do it all!

These 100 parades happen nearly every day and night over the next three weeks, from Feb 14 to Fat Tuesday on Mar 4 (date varies by year). Some parades are small satirical walking krewes to parades for dogs in costume to huge lavish float parades with amazing multi million dollar fiber optic lights.

The last “weekend” goes from Wed Feb 26 through Tue Mar 4 — seven straight days and nights of parades, with two or three parades following one after another, with hundreds of costumed float riders throwing strings of plastic beads and other trinkets to screaming crowds.

It’s not just beads and floats. Almost every parade has bands and dance groups, and some even have celebrities from Hollywood and the world of sports leading the parade as king or queen.

Hang in there, we’re not done yet! The big bash is Mardi Gras day, Fat Tuesday, when the whole city shuts down and dresses in often elaborate costumes to party in the streets, with upwards of one million people celebrating.

I always spend Mardi Gras day in the French Quarter where people have the most elaborate costumes, particularly in the gay community. Carnival is my high holy days, with an almost spiritual feel to me, with so much joy and laughter and a deep sense of connection. I tear up just thinking about it.
