It likely started out with good intentions in trying to atone for the many negative portrayals that we have endured since time in memorial but somewhere along away it started to cannibalize actual well-rounded characters & inadvertently tries to shoe horn us into the broader str8 hegemony.

It's also inadvertently led to somewhat of a generational gap amongst the queer community where seemingly a lot of Gen Alpha/Beta's are seemingly the loudest at pushing for a much more sanitized depiction of queer life compared to us older folks. 🫤

They want modern day Disney-style "rep" that involves a quick oneliner or scene that can very easily be cut out to appease those that hate that stuff.
(Modern day bc I'm obviously excluding those that actually tried (and were snuffed) to put genuine rep from this, I'm talking Lightyear-tier level)

They don't want rep of gay characters like Angel who are openly flirty, flamboyant/femme bc he WANTS to be as opposed to tokenism (and I'd even guess likely to rebel against his masculine past), are openly horny, or even realistically hypersexual.

You can like 'cleaner' LGBT characters sure, you can make them even & there's nothing wrong with that if there's no "motive" on it like many do with them if the setting works, but with them you have to be welcoming to those that are a fucking sty of their own issues bc it's a part of their character

Fran Leibowitz once stated that gay liberation ended with the AIDS Epidemic, pointing that AIDS took the artists, weirdos, and activists. Incidentally the groups who had a lot of sex. Those who remained were the upper class pass as straight gays.

Who instead of liberation focused on acceptance, not realizing that they would never be seen as acceptable, only tolerated. I tend to believe that as the timelines match up with the rise of HRC and the whitewashing of Stonewall as an uprising, not a riot. Not to mention the erasure of sex workers.
