Long term effects of measles can occur years after the initial infection. Measles can erase the body's immune system, making it vulnerable to other diseases, and can also cause SSPE, a fatal brain disease . If you choose not to vax your kid and they infect an infant, you could kill that baby.
The article doesn't mention this, but measles is particularly dangerous for babies. It's one of the reasons you want all their family members vaccinated.
