If he'd known, he might have.
He did what he had to to win, and the big failures were the broken promises and not redistributing all wealth and property owned by anyone who held a slave. And not just to former slaves either.
Enriching everyone but slaveholders coulda sidestepped the Lost Cause

If you want to go more recently, I’d say GW Bush winning the 2000 election. Like Gore probably would have done some not great, but limited warfare in Afghanistan in response to 9/11 but I don’t think that the Iraq War would have happened.

A lot of people don't realize J6 happened because the conservatives have successfully used violence to undermine the will of the people multiple times in the past (e.g. the Brooks Brothers Riot) and it started with the revolt that ended Reconstruction.

Columbus was utterly common though, and slavery was deeply entwined in all Mediterranean sailing cultures. So I don't think killing him off would have mattered. The next sailor would have done all the same things.

Columbus and his successors were bad even by the standards of their time. The ghastly accounts given by Bartolomé de las Casas scandalized Renaissance Spain - a society already accustomed to everyday atrocities like the Spanish Inquisition.

They were bad by the standards of their time, but they were probably not bad by the standards of "European and Muslim Mediterranean sailors," who all practiced rampant and brutal slavery.

Any replacement of Columbus by another mariner probably would have been someone about as bad in the same ways.
