After reading the NYT, WAPO, and CNN just this morning here in Europe, itβs obvious why most people are oblivious to the existential crisis our nation is facing since our media is increasingly unable or unwilling to blast the unvarnished truth. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/feb/26/trump-cabinet-elon-musk
The options are many. The EU allocates huge amount of money(650 billion euros per year) for green transition. Time to cut on that significantly. Nobody takes green transition seriously except Europe. And it may pay with its existence for that. Plus, all those green deals will probably crash and burn
For a very long time, the USA was a reliable partner that also made an important contribution to our security here, but those days are over. It is not acceptable to constantly have to adjust to 180Β° changes in US policy. It makes more than sense to find our own way.
Europe was fine sipping on Russian gas during the Ukraine conflict but the Orange man is the problem because he wants to spend less on European foreign defense.
We shouldn't need to spend on defense in a Union with the second strongest economy in the world.
the Rafale M and the Gripen Maritime can't land on carriers ? And anyway what's the point of the F35 if it's made by an enemy state ? Can the US be trusted to maintain the F35 UK fleet ? Sure, 100+ years alliance is not easy to break, but Trump did it in a month, so Europe should too.
Rafale carrier version is not in any way suitable for our carriers (slight issue of things like catapults and arrestor gear) and there is no naval version of Gripen and if there were, same issue.
So my point is this.
It isnβt a simple case of no more kit. That is a fact.
βοΈEuropean finance ministers meeting in South Africa for a G20 gathering this week are discussing proposals including a European defence bank or a common fund with UK involvement.

What does the UK do with the two carriers? And what does Italy do with theirs?
Not so easy is it?
