i know that playing a new game or character before you have their combo routing down is a normal part of the process because it'll help you learn neutral and defense, but it always feel suboptimal to me

Hot take alert focusing on neutral is helpful!! But only if you can capitalize on it. Have your routes, at least they're fun to practice. If you can't get much reward from hits then there's no point in being good at neutral when you die in three hits, the other player dying in 8.
neutral and defense are much more important than combo routing imo. execution helps but ultimately neutral and defense is what wins games
(RADICAL CLAIM ALERT) id also assert that 'optimal play' dosent exist and therefore shouldnt be sought
like i feel like ive gotta lurk in the lab for two months grinding out my combo execution before actually playing other people, especially people who are more experienced than me, and i've gotta break myself out of that mindset
the thing I have to have before I play a new character is oki. always. if I don’t have oki I get really mad. unfortunately this also means I have to grind BnBs

I learned Wolf Hawkfield's combo routing AFTER learning how to get dopamine rushes from Burning Hammer and Diamond Cutter punishes
Now both of them together… 🤔
