this may be a hot take but every physical media of music other than cassette is fragile as shit. CDs die from a scratch. Vinyl is fragile. hard drives are both slow and fragile. you could unspool and cut up a cassette tape, tape it back together and it just fucking works - ThreadSky

I'm old enough to remember comonly seeing cassettes on the side of the road with half the tape unwound and blowing in the wind. Pre-recorded music cassettes definately had a limited life span.

The idea behind collecting physical media today is preservation. You don’t want to routinely take it out of the case. You would only need to remove the disk to rip the media for it’s imaged digital content.
