Digital storefronts are selling you a license. Physical storefronts are selling you a product. Violating a license can get you sued, but you can do whatever you want with a product you've legally purchased.

Buy physical. Preserve physical. Whether it's games, movies, music, or any other media.

Oh I remember well. I have to crack my legally purchased copy of Trackmania Sunrise any time I want to play it on anything newer than Windows XP (and of course a VM isn't an option). Thanks StarForce.

But the point is that I have that option. Just like I can break DVD CSS to back up movies.

That is true, but if we're gonna bring up the topic of having to crack your game just to use it regardless of it being physical or digital, I personally feel like I might as well just obtain the game digitally and then apply whatever crack I need to apply if I ever need to. Or buy it on GOG.

I think GOG is a storefront that does it right. Any platform that will sell you a digital version of the game unencumbered is doing things ethically. That said, buying digitally and applying your own cracks feels one step removed from just pirating it to me. YMMV of course.

Technically it’s still piracy if you download a rom off the internet, even if you own the game. If you dump your own copy of the game though then it’s not piracy. There’s only like one scenario where it’s illegal to emulate, which I won’t go into. Either way, emulation legal, emulation fun.

Similar can be said for TV, film, anime, etc. Part of the reason why people run to "illegal" channels is because oftentimes, it gives you a better experience than the service you actually pay for.

I always say no one hates Nintendo fans like Nintendo. If they offered people a way to play those old games for a reasonable price, people wouldn't even bother to emulate. But no, they'd be selling super Mario for the SNES for like $40.
