The Heavy Gear animated series released in 2001. What was weird for me is it's pre-Earth invasion, but has GREL soldiers in it (this and other inconsistencies were later removed with "clever" story writing).

I would say that Heavy Gear is mech related, but rather different to Battletech overall.

While both of them feature mechs, Heavy Gears are a lot more human scale, varying from 2-5.5 meters in height, and most of the weaponry is handheld. Battletech is typically 6 meters (Locust) to 16 meters in height (Atlas). Both have completely different design purposes too.
