I have to agree. I'm a huge Ebert fan. He's my favourite film critic...and he was the most-relatable of the all the famous critics. He just seemed to have a very big bug up his buttocks about Lynch. I didn't love Wild At Heart either, but DID think great things about nearly everything else

Peter Straub comes closest to Lynch on the page, from my POV. "What's worst thing you've ever done?" "Well, I won't tell you THAT, but..." The worst thing is to destroy what you love, because you love it. To defile it, eat it alive and spit it out again with all its love intact, yet forever changed.

I generally liked Ebert yeah, but overall when it came to like, anything that smacked of the uncanny or inexplicable, I found his instincts to be sort of off. So like he becomes very unreliable when it comes to horror, especially.
