Good article Phil, we seldom see informed discussion of the different types of platforms. Adaptive optics have made big improvements to ground based telescopes. Are you able to quantify HOW much better things have gotten with them? (tech also swiped from the NRO like Hubble I bet)

I've often thought the "dark side of the moon" would be a great place for large telescopes to investigate many wavelengths. It seems more useful than going to Mars.
