Matt, do you know if the cash amount of the trade then has to be spread across the player’s contract like it would be if he was being purchased/transferred from a club in another country?

One would assume it doesn’t apply to the player acquisition cost which furthers the straightforward nature of it. The player is in MLS & has a roster designation already. This is just replacing the current GAM trades with actual cash.

So the difference between say MLS and EPL in this aspect is the MLS owns all contracts not the clubs. So a move like Mitoma to United is a transfer as clubs own contracts; but in the MLS a Lucho Acosta move to Miami is a “trade”. I have that right?

Basically, yep. Acosta is already in MLS so any cross-team move is still a trade - just for cash or GAM and not just GAM.

Another interesting mechanism to allow cash to move within the league. The most interesting piece to me is the player designations being locked in. Wonder if we’d see guys who are traded as DPs with the deal being conditional on buy down to TAM players..

I’m not sure there’d be any conditional needs. Ex: STL starts ‘25 designating Bürki as a DP. He’s locked in as a DP til at least the next roster lock date (after summer window). If he’s traded for cash to Chicago in May, he’s a DP to them. Any buy down is up to the buying team only (their TAM).

Right; but I think what I’m wondering is if there is any mechanism in this where say STL has 3 DPs rostered and we make a trade for someone who is a DP now but part of the trade involves that player being bought down to TAM level.. Presume that’s probably not allowed; but still a thought.

Oh gotcha. The way I understand it, it wouldn’t be. If we choose the DP model and have 3 registered DPs already then we could not trade for another DP. We’d have to buy one down first, have that paperwork w/the league and then complete the trade. But again, all on the buying team.
