Religious freedom was once wildly unpopular. Votes for women. Ending the criminalization of gay people. Abolishing slavery and Jim Crow. Liberal democracy. None of these things became reality without doing the hard work of persuading people that they were right. Neither will freedom of movement.

Publicly executing people for petty crimes by torturing them to death was reality for millennia. A natural human impulse, an immutable law, we can't stop it. The people who did that were no different from us, they weren't some different species. It changed only by convincing people it was wrong.

I wonder if the progress of climate change makes this a moot discussion? As climate intensifies people will be on the move because they must be. And other people will resist that movement. I don't see a happy ending here.

That others believe they can somehow make their own lives better by sacrificing the basic rights of some subgroup - that's a non-starter for me.

I used to believe it was a non-starter for most Americans, but looks like it isn't.

it didn't change by convincing people it was wrong; it changed because societies got too large for public punishment to be visible to most people.
