Perhaps Dems didn't vote in the bluest places because they have internalized that votes matter only in the swing states. The Electoral College is the ultimate voter-suppression tool. Hard to get people to care about the "optics" of the popular vote.

Maybe people knew that their vote wasn’t needed in their blue state for Harris to win and didn’t prioritize it. Not saying that’s smart necessarily, but it may not have anything to do with being unhappy about the Democratic candidate or not caring if Trump won.

Maybe, but if they showed up to vote down-ballot and left the presidential race blank, that argues for more of a protest. I've been pushing back on that "protest" assumption, myself, but this new look is starting to make me think it really was a problem.

I suspect that Harris paid a price for being a woman. I think it was a major factor in Hillary Clinton's loss in 2016 too. It's hard to quantify because a lot of people aren't willing to admit it. By the same token, I suspect being a white man helped Biden in 2020 relative to Trump.

I'm looking from the outside here in deep red southern GA, but it seems like a lot of the Dems winning mayoral and statehouse races in CA and NY and other Dem strongholds would be running as moderate Republicans if they were in swing states.

Here in Huntington Beach, CA the city council just went 7-0 Republican largely because of CA state housing mandates. People here don’t want growth despite us badly needing housing.

This was not a polarization geographic sorting type of election, it wasn't red areas get redder and blue gets bluer. The red-shift was *biggest* in blue states and cities outside of where the Harris campaign was focused on swing states.

Did the very blue places end up electing Republicans in the more local elections? Read through the article and it doesn't mention that occurring. Perhaps Democrats just didn't show up in places they know she would win? Which isn't great, but it seems like another reasonable conclusion.
