The Vice President, who has no legal role in the chain of command and no executive power, authorized the acting Secretary of Defense to send in troops to defend Congress. Not the commander-in-chief. He never did it. Pence gave orders and they were followed.

And the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs was openly addressing the military about how their oath to the Constitution superseded any unlawful orders. Effectively conducting his own foreign policy, too. He saw it as part of his job, said so, to "land the plane" in a process he normally has no part in.

Trump was not in operational control of the government and military Jan 6 to Jan 20. He hadn't been officially stripped of his powers (as he should have), and they still let him sign pardons, but he was not in charge. Nobody was following his orders and he mostly wasn't even trying to give them.

We papered over it pretending it was just muddling through, only a couple of weeks, and nobody explicitly saying they were assuming the president's constitutional powers. But that's what happened. The constitutional functioning of the government completely broke down and not just on Jan 6 itself.

Well of course the people who took part and orchestrated the over throwing of an elected government, deny it. Admitting it would have meant jail time for those involved and disbarment from holding any future government office. Sadly the failure to bring those responsible to justice, may haunt us.
