i've always loved card games (especially a board/card game hybrid called sequence which i always loved playing with my family) but balatro's been getting me more into other types of card games over the past few years. i'm pretty glad the first balatro irl cards is just a normal deck instead of a tcg

When I learned my grandpa had died, my dad and me were on our way there to play cribbage with him. His last words, as far as I know, were "Where are you? I thought you were coming" over the phone to my dad.

I haven't really played much cribbage since then because it hurts.

I was ecstatic when these cards were announced, I love playing Solitaire, and I will probably learn some of the games you mentioned in the post like Big 2, Ride the Bus, and Golf. I can't buy the cards yet, so I hope they stick around a while. I hope you keep making stuff that's important to you.

My favourite card game is called Mao. You aren't allowed to know the rules unless you already do, and you get dealt a one card penalty every time you break one, without an explanation of why, or what rule you broke. Whoever gets rid of their cards first makes a new rule for the next round.

it can be ANYTHING. the rule you suggested is a great example! it can be designed to make your friends laugh, or ruin the game, or make it so you always win - although that last one isn't really very fun. you get better at good rule making the more you play!

Mao is great, there’s also another similar game I love (I forget the name) that does the “winner adds a new rule” thing but the rules are public knowledge and there are speed rules around not being last to slap the pile. Makes it really easy to trip people up into being too cautious or too hasty.

Everyone I've ever taught this game to either becomes OBSESSED with it - it's a knowledge puzzle! - or hates me and refuses to play any more because they think I am being a penalty-dealing evil dictator. I guess that's where the name comes from?

Second favourite card game: 1000 Blank Cards! Everyone playing gets five blank cards to fill in. The only rules are that it needs a name, a picture, and a description, and that "points" are the currency. You then put them all in a deck, shuffle, and play!

Games of 1000BC often end up with people nullifying each others' cards and yelling. Previous games I've played have involved cards that send people outside, or make people get drinks for other people. I love how open-ended and emergent the gameplay is!

anyway, like you said, cards are a fascinating cultural object that we impose beliefs and ideas upon, and I think that's neat. It's why I like tarot readings -- they're a narrative tool used to relate to other people, and that's SO COOL

Honestly, its a very lovely thing, and even before reading it I couldn't think of a more fitting thing would be a normal deck of cards.

Besides, nothing stopping people from grabbing a marker and deciding their 5 of Diamonds is worth 30 more chips on their own, making their own game.

Even better with the cyberpunk crossover tbh cause rtal and CDPR released the major arcana tarot set from the game as a PDF dlc for free on their website (googleable) so you can print that and use that for the tarot to be balatro accurate plus the deck just needs planets and spectral with stickers
