Yes, it certainly does that. What source are you thinking about specifically? The NYT? If you choose NYT back to 1980 database, you can also click on "Publications" at the top and then NYT Online or NYT Late Edition to get access to the paper by date. For example, there are 76 articles for today.

I’m an exploratory reader of news; I generally like to browse the physical or virtual “front page” to see headlines of interest and then read a few articles in full. Generally from the Strib, NYT, WaPo, LA Times, etc. Hard to do that via a search interface, as I don’t know what I’m looking for!
