Even if Elon Musk weren't grifting off of taxpayers for every one of his businesses, a human mission to Mars is beyond crazy. It will be obscenely expensive. Human missions are ridiculous. Humans would need to breathe, eat, piss, shit, and clean themselves for several months. Send robots instead.

They certainly have - a lot. The biggest issue imho is that NASA benefits go to citizens whereas SpaceX goes to shareholders, even though they are using government funds.
