The show is also fixated on creating moments that tell you the origin of X behavior from the original show. How did he start bringing donuts every day? How did he get his boat?

I don't mind the fanservicey scenes for these, but with little other substance it feels like a reminder of how little justification there was for this show to exist in the first place.
And with how obsessed they are with cameos, there are a few surprising omissions, and I'm not talking about Doakes.
Where is Tom Matthews? He was a prominent recurring cop character associated with Harry, who knew much about Dexter's origins. Some fans even think he knew he was a killer.
Where is Dr. Vogel? She was another character associated with Harry, and helped create the Code, having a big impact on Dexter's development, even if he didn't know it.
Perhaps she was excluded because she was introduced in Season 8 of the original show, with the ending everyone hated.
But with how clearly prominent they wanted Harry to be in this show, I think including these peripheral characters around him could have been a lot more interesting than having Laura flashbacks that tell us what we already know, or a Brian subplot that goes nowhere.
The biggest surprise for me is that the season ends with Harry... still alive. I thought for sure they would show us his death here, one way or another, but they didn't.
Instead, they end the season like almost very season of the original: The status quo is much the same as the start of the season, with the only major difference being Dexter killed more people than he had before. To me this is the biggest indicator that they are banking on milking more seasons.
