... Okay fine, let's talk about this a little more. Here's a thread on 'old Magic set worldbuilding'.
Dominaria is largely a series of D&D pastiches stapled together with real-world stuff. The Weatherlight is just a Spelljammer, for god's sake. At the time, people compared it to Star Trek.

if i ignore such things as Planeswalker's Guide articles, art direction, flavor text, and the actual content of Magic Story then perhaps you may be onto something here π

Historical and Mythological references 100% feel better than thematic and 20th century draws.
I don't at all like the way "start your Engines" and "X Joins Up" make me feel, and
Lorwyn's set symbol is blade and a leaf. Planar Chaos is a PC, and twisting hourglass, and overlapping planes.
Aetherdrift is a checkered flag and OTJ is a cowboy hat.
I'm not leaving the game over that; also I do not like it
I love magic story, and there are so many cool worlds. Aetherdrift to me has a fantastic story and a cool setting even though I don't care for racing generally. My least favorite plane is honestly dominaria because to me, as someone who did not start with it it feels so generic to me
There's the post bro-fight (Which itself is post advanced Empire downfall to cult of sickness/polution/ideology/industry), that became the Dark times, than the could times, than the War against cult 2
It gets to the point the post-apocalypse set is also so much an Apocalypse set people didn't even know it was post-apocalypse
Downright comical.
It's a lot easier to identify references because we have so much more access to content and shared online communities.
Meanwhile, OTJ's flavor involving several other planes coming to colonize It with a bunch of criminals and villain camelos popping up is noticeable.
And a part of it seem to be not being isolated and sole-self dedicated, like STX, SNC and DSK.
And even notably planes were chokeful of references, even in First visits.
Yes, those are elementos being vocally dislike now, but...
After WOE and MKM.
HMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!
And it has a card that's name directly lifts a line from a well known anime
I can't say mean things about Alara though, even in a deliberately reductive thread.
The Kraken in Theros was just a random rare
