Basically, Irem has been a part of the pachinko industry for many decades and is in fact their bread and butter today. As part of that, they used to produce pachinko simulators.

Usually these sims were based on machines in the real world Umi Monogatari series, though a handful feature Hammerin' Harry, their own IP.

Anyway, starting on the PS2, they started adding bonus modes to enhance these sims' value proposition. They're humble mystery games, but not without charm.

With 12, these modes got bolder and more elaborate, taking place in full 3D environments and mechanics inherited from Steamboat Chronicles and Disaster Report; some of these refinements would even make it back into the latter. And indeed, these Pachipara modes share a lot of devs with those games.

13 and 14 are the peak of this experimentation. They're no longer just diversions; they're fully fledged games intended to attract people otherwise uninterested in just pure pachinko. And that's what's great about them: pachinko factors into the story and gameplay, but it's hardly ALL that you do.

By and large, they're quasi-open world RPGs with life sim elements. And pachinko isn't even your only means of making money! You really don't have to engage it with it more than the stories demand, which isn't even all that often. I love them; 14 is one of my favorite PS2 games period.

It's been a long time since I've botched it, so I don't remember the exact specifics off hand, but yeah, I think you get scolded and docked a few affection points in the background. Nothing too severe, but yeah. You can slow your approach way down, so it's hard to flub in practice, but yeah.
