games being delayed is good. It means that an original release would've produced an inferior product, and it allows everyone to increase the quality of their work.

No one wants to cut anyone any slack. They only want it cut to themselves. Fast food order? Get that right the first time. Million dollar SoC, yeah that too.
I'm thrilled when I hear of a delay as it means we have a chance to play some of our ever growing backlog. Heck, there's games from the ps2 era I still want to play.
Also, games are pieces of art in my opinion, so we won't rush an artist and expect the best work out of it... The same with games, let them work as much as they want and release when they think it's done.
To be fair, it was two sided and very complicated. I think both parties were in the wrong and Scott should have been more opened about his donations, considering what kind of a fan base he had. While the fan base should calm the hell down and not try to kill the man for some of his beliefs.
I’ll never be mad over a delay hell I don’t care if I have to wait years before news of an release date tbh all I need is a title and confirmation it’s happening and it’s fine even ifthe title isn’t revealed although that makes me feel like the game has an better chance to be canceled tbh
It can definitely be frustrating as a gamer to be so excited for a game to be coming out and it gets delayed. What’s more frustrating is getting a game half made and knowing a company does not treat its employees right. Delay games as much as needed. Art takes time. Most of us respect that.
Several of my favorite games came out under tight deadlines, I sometimes wonder how they'd have turned out with an extra 18 months or so of development.
Hopefully that's true, but it's not an absolute. You could also have some asshat publisher executive come in at the last minute, start a pissing contest to mark territory, and demand changes that screw things up.
I got tired of lazy rich kids ruining games for me. They would publicly bitch on forums and dev pages like they were entitled to it. Studios that stand up to those losers make better products. So do those who don't practice lazy shareholder capitalism.
One of the phrases we had during my time at Blizzard went along the lines, “People won’t remember if it was late, only if it was great.” Obviously, developers can’t sit on a game and polish forever, but it made for a good guideline that emphasized quality over some scheduled release guesstimate.
Ah yes, Diablo III and Heart Of The Swarm, two Blizzard projects known for being extremely polished. Definitely no glaring, obvious issues to talk about in those titles. And if there were issues I'm sure they were addressed in a timely manner. No culling of entire fanbases to see here
Diablo III wasn't unpolished. It was the best possible execution of what it was trying to be. The problem was 'what it was trying to be' was fundamentally musguided from day one.
The rejection and removal of the auction house post-launch threw off a bunch of other intended mechanics, and I think the game team made the best of a tough decision.
I was on the technical side of things, though, so I don’t have full insight.
The loot drop rates were scaled around players being able to use the auction house, to the point that using it was effectively mandatory. Once it was removed, the drop rates were abysmally low, so it had to get scaled up in a Loot 2.0 patch.
Star Citizen will someday be in a history book (if there's any books left) of what overpromising and redeveloping to meet the expectations of funds provided and promises made becomes a game dev ouroboros.
Well, yeah, it’s better to delay than to ship broken.
But imo, if you have to delay the game there was an issue somewhere between marketing selling the game to players, giving a release date, planning a release date, and progress on development.
But when every title either is big delayed or ships completely broken, isn’t it time to chill out with a cup of tea and reassess how the industry is marketing the games vs their development cycle?
I think there is a big flaw there, leading to companies announcing projects earlier and earlier.
Most of the time, too early, and then not being able to deliver on it because no game dev is ever a gentle stream. It’s always a chaotic endless ocean until you can make out the shape of land on the horizon.
And as much as I complain about Silksong, not having a release date for it after years-
Makes me extremely hopeful that Team Cherry is doing the right thing by holding off committing on a date until they have something good enough to know for sure they should be able to ship on time with the quality they expect (randomly picked example, I’m not waiting for Silksong that much (lies))
I believe. They said it might be 2025, but would only commit to a date when the game is ready enough.
So I’m just waiting, giving the devs all the time they need to polish it and make a quality game.
I will always blame the shit release of Cyberpunk on the tantrums thrown with the second postponement.
I would rather wait additional years than get a shit game with an amazing concept.
I do miss completed projects being released. It must be more cost effective to publish shit and wait for the polish... short term, at least.
Long term, I just pirate games and spend the time to bypass security features. That's my cost effectiveness.
It’s such a slap in the face when they release a game immediately followed with a statement saying a patch is coming to fix all the issues. Basically saying “Buy our unfinished game and we will fix it for you later.”
Alternatively, why not set more realistic and achievable deadlines for game releases so the devs don’t run the risk of their fandoms being disappointed that an anticipated game is delayed once, twice, or thrice?
Unfortunately, developers have to eat and pay the bills especially indie developers. Admittedly, they could just up the game in early access like a lot of companies do.
In some cases it’s just a sign that management behind the scenes is a friggin clown show and that the game will not only take forever but is probably going to come out a jumbled mishmash of barely explored ideas that just barely resembles a functional game

I'm never forgiving Twitter for that.
And then there's Duke Nukem Forever.
But, as with all things, the golden rule must be followed.
Don't be a dick about it.
Also, Cyberpunk77 got delayed repeatedly and was *still* a complete mess.
I was on the technical side of things, though, so I don’t have full insight.

Mistakes can happen.

Shows bad prioritizing
I miss those days when you knew that what launched on Day 1 was at least Feature Complete.

Depends on the devs really
