Now suppose you’re trying to invent an entirely new monetary and record-keeping system from scratch. But for some reason it needs to include a version of mining which still consumes resources and destroys the environment but does so in order to solve definitionally useless math problems

Like yeah I understand that the crypto mining concept serves a purpose in that it creates a kind of scarcity etc. But if your project requires creating a new version of mining which eats up resources and doesn’t even produce anything physical maybe you go back to the drawing board?
