You know, depending where they are located, they can look different and I did some poking around and lupins and bluebonnets, or bluebells, are related.
I don’t think bluebonnets and bluebells are the same thing, but bluebonnets are a type of lupine
If NG identified these as bluebells, I would quibble, honestly. It’s a common name and those can vary, but I think it would be a misstatement to call those bluebells.
Bluebonnets in Texas are much different than the bluebells of the north. I recall being told locals also call the northern ones bluebonnets. What's in a name...
I can’t find the photo on the website with the other winners of the year. I’m very curious where you found the image and how you were able to identify the bird and flower (but not the photographer). It’s a little odd.
Ravens and Crows in fact are quite the same thing. They belong to the same genus, Corvus. Only their size makes a real difference regarding the naming of individual types. All Ravens are Crows, but only a few Crows are Ravens.
They are Corvids, as are Stellar Jays. Very intelligent. But I think there are differences other than size. The voice and behaviour is very different. Ravens tend to live in higher elevations and crows tend to live in the cities, close to the garbage bins. Crows will bed down in a common rookery. 1/
Yes, they are Corvids (Corvidae) but that term describes the whole bird family, whereas the common genus within the family to which Crows and Ravens belong is the genus of Corvus. Meaning their species are way closer relatives to each other than to Jays (genus Cyanocitta) or Magpies (genus Pica) 1/2
Of course, there are differences between the Corvus species as you said. But the same goes for different Jay and Magpie species. The term Crow in that regard is often used colloquially to describe the whole Corvus genus, hence the common differentiation between "small Crows" and "large Crows". 2/2

I had no idea corvids were such badasses!
I can see why they call a group of them a "murder."

You have to be a certain age.
