After all, Donald Trump has promised to ban misinformation research on the day he is inaugurated (https://nypost.com/2022/12/15/trump-vows-to-ban-feds-from-id-ing-domestic-misinformation-if-elected/). His reliance on evidence-based decision making is legendary, so perhaps the arguments in our papers will convince him that this decision would be wrong. They should. 2/n

We make the basic point that democracy relies on a shared body of knowledge. Citizens may disagree about policies, but disagreement can only unfold productively within shared basis of facts. 5/n

We show by example how disinformation campaigns have been deployed against policy-relevant scientific knowledge such as in the case of climate change (and previously tobacco, now also COVID and vaccines). These campaigns compromise the epistemic integrity of the democratic process. 6/n
