When I lived in Taiwan, making eye contact with the driver was the last thing a pedestrian wanted to do. That only assured the driver that you were aware of their vehicle, so it was full speed ahead! You had to cross the street by NOT looking at them.

How I feel I have to behave now in the presence of all wheeled conveyances, from electric push scooters, to bicycles, to cars, and even city buses. Pedestrians are just obstacles to everyone else, at least in Paris.
