People have also mentioned beehiiv. Reminds me of the Great Social Media Scramble, when we had Hive, Cohost, Spill, and Bluesky vying for people's exodus from Twitter.

It would be nice to see which alternative is strongest (which, of course, would first mean knowing all of the alternatives).

agree. ghost needs to start investing more on marketing. it’s great that they have people like @caseynewton.bsky.social using ghost now, but it’s still a fraction of substack

In both cases you're likely doing a lot of promotion on social media and elsewhere. Substack's network doesn't really work for finding an audience anymore (contrary to advertising), and it locks you in these days so it's hard to move your audience *out*.

Yeah, that make it hard to move your audience out thing is something that most writing publish platforms do nowadays. So Substack most likely is in the cash out phase, where the platform is big, popular and well known enough to pull a fortune out of it and will implode one day.

It doesn't make enough revenue to justify its fundraising valuation and absolutely will implode, or transform beyond recognition, leaving an author's network locked into whatever it becomes.

The platform, the thing itself doesn't matter, as long as the people behind it somehow make a fortune. Like making sure that their payday is more than awesome and that they can sell off their stock for a shitload of money.
