It’s far from my favorite but even lesser pratchett is good pratchett. It is just a different type of comedy than the later—more general parody of the fantasy genre than the more focused societal comedy/critique of the mid to later books. If it had read it first, I probably would not have continued.

The first book I read was Eric. I didn't like it much. I re-read it and loved it because it caused something of a reset. It was off to the races after that, and have re-read several books several times.

The only Discworld I've read so far was Night Watch. Ask three Pratchett fans "where do I start?" and you'll get five opinions defended to the hilt, so I took this one from a good friend. The Colour of Magic seems to be a real minority opinion though - will be interesting to see how it compares.

I honestly didn't love Night Watch. Gave me lots of but I didn't feel it had a particularly gripping plot arc or any character development to speak of - nothing to really engage me beyond the humour. (don't hate me plz)

no hate. everyone has different tastes. Pratchett did strive to try to make every book stand on its own (even playing a bit loose with continuity, like the "bit of an event" here was a MAJOR event in a prior book), and i usually try to sell it that way, but yeah, different tastes and tolerances.

I started with color of magic myself. and i liked it enough to keep going. later books i fell in love with alot more, tho. esp Vimes' books (with night watch ending up my favorite of all the DW books). I usually rec based on the persons taste. COM i'll do for completionists like me.

For me it has to be Guards! Guards!.
I tried The Colour of Magic when it came out, but couldn’t get on with it.
A friend lent me his battered copy of Guards! Guards! and I was immediately hooked.
