Wrote about the Fifteenth Doctor, and the optics of Doctor Who gesturing towards a spin-off focused on Tennant just as Ncuti Gatwa's stepping into the role

Tennant is probably the most enthusiastic former cast member, and his Doctor is certainly a fan favorite. It makes sense that they would keep him around as long as they can for whatever they can use him for, but it does seem like a big cop-out.
This articulates my uneasiness with the way bi-generation was handled in a way I, as a white man, couldn't. I am stoked for the Christmas Special though and have a sneaking suspicion Tennant's going to largely be ignored except maybe for specials/audio/novels.
It felt like when they brought Ultimate Peter Parker back to life in the comics when they were using Miles. A weird undercutting of the character that undoes the normal transition of character legacies.
I would have liked to see 14 depowered, with most of his abilities going to 15, so he is now a very clever human who joins UNIT as an advisor. 14, as he hands over the sonic screwdriver to 15: "We are both the Doctor, but you are THE Doctor."
Like giving Conan O'Brien the Tonight show but putting Leno as a lead in. They're trying to have it both ways while short changing the person supposedly given the main roll. Tennant was great, but this seems like just a ratings grab. I hope Gatwa's Doctor has some better, newer ideas.
Yes! I groaned when I saw how they handled the transition. A Black person merits a singular honour suddenly the prize, position, title, etc...is shared with a yt counterpart. see: 2019 Booker Prize, Wimbledon 2023 Clervie Ngounoue
Trying not to judge my writing on social media responses, but after days of seeing Who fans dismiss all the bigeneration stuff as nothing to think about critically, it's nice to see that the people on here actually *watched* the show lol
I get that p.o.v., but don't agree Gatwa was undermined. He is dazzling, unambiguously the new lead, owning this ending, Christmas, and 2+ seasons to come.
(I sort of see the 'magical negro' concern, but not sure how to disentangle that from simply being the Doctor dispensing Doctorish empathy.)
I don’t see how a new Doctor can fully come into their own in the shadow of a new Tennant series. And I agree with some of the lines that made me squirm.

"Well the *real* Doctor is with Donna."
No more than three days passed before I saw that exact comment on a YouTube Video.
Also holy hell don't read the comments on that article. Christ.
