Now Mayor Baraka was raised in Newark by these two revolutionary artists. He attended University High in Newark, he got a BA from Howard and an MEd from St. Peter's in Jersey City and he served as principal of Central High in Newark for six years. Mayor Baraka reps Brick City and he bleeds Jersey.
I wanted to share that speech he gave at one of the bigwig writers associations but I'm blanking on the association/year/any vital information to Google.
And the people of Newark? They ride for him. He's been reelected twice since he became mayor in 2014. They know he loves the community. He was featured on "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" for the love of the gods. You don't get more cool, hip, and Jersey than that.
So. When I say that arresting Mayor Ras Baraka, who is currently running for governor of New Jersey, is an insult to every person in New Jersey, every person in Newark, and every Black person, every poet, and every leftist in America, I stand by those words.
