Always interested to see what you have to say about Bruckner! Have you tried the Pristine remastering? I forget who did it but Andrew Rose always works wonders.

I haven't heard the Pristine version of the Furtwängler Ninth - the DG mastering is already pretty good - but I'm tempted by some of their other Bruckner offerings.

Every Gramophone review since 1923 can be read in the Digital Archive - you can subscribe either monthly or annually. A collection of Cooke's essays is available in an excellent book called Vindications. One caveat is that Cooke's essay on Bruckner editions is very out of date now and best ignored.

I was a late starter as I didn't buy my copy until 1990! However, I'd already read a lot of his Gramophone reviews in my university library. It didn't do my physics and computer science grades any favours, but it was much more interesting reading! 😊

It's the same with Simpson. They were inevitably passing judgement on versions they hadn't heard, having nothing but the scores to go on. And in the case of (eg) 3, they didn't even have all of those.

Yes, his performances of the same work vary wildly. Look no further than the Beethoven 5th. The 1947 live with the BPO - the often puzzling rubato - rest fermatas you can drive a truck through - the mad dash in the finale's coda. Compare that to the rather staid ho-hum 1953 studio 5th with the VPO.
