Smelting and melting are two different things. Smelting doesn't just liquify metal, it purifies by removing gases and turns other components into slag.
Melting is simply taking a solid substance and heating it till it’s in liquid form
Smelting is taking raw material and heating it till the constituent materials are melted and they can be separated
